G9 Bulbs - A light bulb evolution
If the consumer wished to have a contemorary lighting scheme using a halogen lighting scheme their options were limited. Until relatively recently the majority of halogen fittings incorporated halogen capsules had these had to be operated via a transformer (12v). Wall lights and chandeliers had to incorporate often bulky and heavy torodial transformers into their design. Early halogen light fittings were not dimmable and integrating the transformers also limited the "look" of fittings and had a huge impact on the costs, often making them too expensive for most people's pockets.
Then along came the G9 bulb, the light bulb evolution, which is fully dimmable and operates on mains voltage (230/240v). This bulb has opened whole new markets to the lighting industry. They may be small in their appearance, but they offer huge potential to both the designer and consumer. With a unique base (2 halo pins or loops) they cut out the "middle man" (the bulky 12v transformer). Wall lights and chandeliers are now more contemporary and sleek in design as there is no transformer to hide. In addition as there is no transformer required, these new designs can be manufactured at a huge cost reduction to the consumer making them a much more affordable option.
To comply with new legislation regarding incandescent light bulbs and to reduce running costs, the G9 bulb now has an energy saving option, the new G9 32w. This uses the latest technology combining the filament and the gas to burn brighter which is therefore able to offer 40w output giving a saving of 30%. So you can save the planet and money too.
Recently the G9 halogen bulb has morphed its appearance. The Energy Saver Halogen range now available mimics the look of GLS and candle bulbs (basically they are a G9 bulb with the casing of a GLS or candle). This provides an aesthetic, energy saving and dimmable option to the compact fluorescent (CLS) equivalents.
So there we have it, a potted history of the evolution of the G9 bulb. Cheaper to buy and run and better for the environment too. Watch this space as I am sure it will not be long for the latest "new arrival" which will only be good news for the consumer.
